Fireflies Scorpion
Wild boar One of our frequent visitors to our upcycled bird feeders in the garden along with robins and red starts. A beautful little butterfly that loves the scabious and lavender in the garden during summer. Rarely this size but you can hear them often in the summer. As yet too elusive to photograph!
page highlight Dieci castella of Valleriana near Pescia Unlike the flora, our local fauna is not rooted to the spot, and as a consequence is much harder to photograph! We had added some library pictures to our own here - just to fill the gaps until we manage to snap the creatures we have so far only heard, or else have been too quick to get away before we’ve been able to snap them. spring button summer button autumn button winter button fauna button Hiking in northern Tuscany Hiking in northern Tuscany Our self-catering accommodation Our self-catering accommodation Biking and cycling in northern Tuscany Biking and cycling in northern Tuscany Contact us Contact us Where to eat in Tuscany Where to eat in Tuscany Skiing in Tuscany Skiing in Tuscany Home page Home page What to see in Tuscany Additional guest services here at Numero 182 Additional guest services here at Numero 182

immerse yourself at the farm in the wood
page break wild boar dragonfly Green lizard house centipede porcupine Though mostly active during darker hours, wild boar roam the woods around our farm and are keen to root around for tasty morsels especially our vegetables! It’s unlikely you’ll come across one unless you’re out early in the morning. Red deer You may well see roe deer during your stay here and will almost certainly hear them barking in the woods of an evening. We spotted this doe on the olive terraces and have seen a rather majestic stag on our driveway. violet carpenter bee Another that likes to help us eat our home-grown vegetables, we have yet to see a porcupine ourselves, but have found plenty of their quills around the farm. Italian wall lizard Quite a bit larger than the wall lizard, and bright green in colour, these are less common but still seen regularly here, the females have a blue throat. These little reptiles are ubiquitous but quite harmless, you’ll hear them more often than you’ll see them as they scamper away when they hear you coming, you will still see plenty around though, some less shy than others but will always keep their distance. Pioana buzzard pine marten You can hear and see these giant bees coming a long time before they arrive! They buzz around the spring flowers collecting pollen. Although not as common as some of the other creatures that frequent our land, we see a few dragonflies. There is a stream at the boarder of our land, so water isn’t that far away. We find a few of these inside the house, especially at night time. They run very fast! grasshopper photo frame Western conifer seed bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis) photo frame Ground bug (Lygaeus equestris) Migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) photo frame Scorpion These little fellows like to take the fruit off the trees. This very blurry picture is one in our walnut tree. We often see - and hear - birds of prey gliding around over the tops of the trees. wooly aphid firefly These delightful insects magically light up the garden and woods at night like tiny little beacons. You are most likely to see them in the late springtime and early summer. This tiny little creature was crawling on the garden table. It is no more than 3mm in length. queen of spain fritillery Our chickens Great tit Reggie Reggie is our rescue dog, he was found alone in the woods as a puppy, which has given him a nervous nature, which in turn means he barks at new faces (albeit for a short time) which makes him a great guard dog for the farm but at heart he loves nothing more than a belly rub. Our chickens provide us with a daily supply of fresh eggs.
